Perth Workshop for YA Writers Sept 29

I'll be running a writing workshop for young adults during the school holidays - there are still some places left for this free event at the Lesmurdie Library on the morning of September 29 (Thurs.) You can book via this link: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=936837& Rebecca Laffar-Smith's event at High Wycombe Library also sounds great! (And includes pizza. Why didn't I think of that?)

Bagpipes, a Monster, and the Power of Storytelling

“Hope.” It was as if Granny Flora had drawn a sword. “That’s what the tales are, hope. And dreams. Dreams a person might make true in the time to come. Nightmares, too, like the monster that squeals and skirls in the night. We each meet our own monster, our own dragon, our own unknown thing in the darkness.” That’s a snippet from Greatheart, my story in the forthcoming anthology The [...]

The Unlikely Hero

Here's a link to my most recent post for Writer Unboxed. In it I talk about unlikely heroes in folklore, fiction and real life. Make sure you read the comments - they are very insightful! Photo 99656242 / Courage © Mbolina | Dreamstime.com

Reading and Q&A for The Pixel Project: watch it here

Hi all, and apologies for neglecting this space for so long. Earlier this month I did a live reading and Q&A on YouTube, in support of The Pixel Project, an organisation that raises funds to combat violence against women. The Pixel Project regularly hosts conversations with authors in which they chat about their work, creating female characters, and why it's so important to raise the issue of violence against women [...]

Upcoming Appearances

I hope many readers will take the opportunity to tune into this session in early March. I'm doing a reading (from The Harp of Kings) and a Q&A for The Pixel Project as part of a series featuring women writers. The Pixel Project raises funds to stop violence against women. Note, the date and time given are for Pacific Time. Check what the time difference is for your part of [...]

Season’s Greetings and December Update

Hi readers. My best wishes to you all for the holiday season, and special appreciation for those who have to continue working through that time, especially hospital and emergency services staff. Christmas photo of Rocky and Bramble is at the foot of this post! Very little news on the book front at this point, sorry. I'm still waiting for a decision from my agent about the Baba Yaga trilogy proposal. [...]

Something New and Magical

I see to my horror that it's three months since I last posted here - apologies to all. Readers who follow my Facebook author page and/or my Instagram will have seen this picture already - it represents an unexpected turn in my ideas for a new project. I've had  the best part of a year off writing for various reasons, and it hasn't been easy getting back into the swing [...]

Wintry Update

Here in Perth it's winter time and bitterly cold by Aussie standards. The temptation to snuggle under the blankets and forget the world outside would be hard to resist even if we weren't in partial lockdown. Because of the pandemic situation, quite a few events have been cancelled or postponed, including some of mine. We don't have new dates for Supanova Perth at this point. The pandemic situation in New [...]

Awards and Upcoming Appearances

Awards Some news on the awards front! Both The Harp of Kings and A Dance with Fate are finalists in this year's Tin Duck Awards, in the category Best Professional Work - Long Form. Why both? Because these awards were not run in 2020. My novels are up against some worthy contenders (and, of course, having two books in the same category may mean my vote is split between them.) [...]

Mother Thorn: progress report

If you're waiting for the linen-covered trade edition of Mother Thorn and Other Tales of Courage and Kindness, you'll probably know already that there's been a further delay in publication, as it was advertised as coming out on April 11. Unfortunately there was an issue with the printing, especially of the cover illustration. We're hoping for sample copies of the new, improved version very soon, and if they are OK [...]
